Greater Lair Keys aren't the real grind in Diablo 4; the real grind is wasting them on bosses whose loot pool doesn't help your build. During Season 14, the smart approach is to treat every key as part of a resource loop, alongside materials, War Plan progress, and D4 Gold, rather than as a ticket to random loot. Season 15's returning legacy Uniques add another layer, because the best target may be an item that remains useful through later Mythic upgrades.
How the Greater Key Loop Actually Works
You don't need a Greater Lair Key to start a Greater boss encounter. The key is spent after the fight, when you open your personal Hoard. That distinction matters in groups: joining someone else's kill helps you clear the boss, but it doesn't remove the need for your own key when claiming rewards. Initiate bosses such as Beast in the Ice, Grigoire, Lord Zir, Varshan, and Urivar are the entry point. Defeat them, open the Hoard, and look for Greater Lair Keys among the rewards. War Plans can also supply keys, while Helltides, World Bosses, Legion Events, Tree of Whispers caches, and other endgame activities help maintain your standard-key stock.
Do This, Not That
The fastest method depends on your full loop, not your biggest DPS screenshot. A boss that dies quickly but has slow travel, awkward phases, or a messy reward process can lose to a slightly less rewarding target that you clear repeatedly. From what I've seen, players also burn keys too early because they chase the first useful Unique instead of deciding which slot their build actually needs. Use this short routine.
Pick War Plan rewards that include keys when they match activities you already enjoy.
Save standard keys for several consecutive Initiate runs.
Open every eligible Hoard instead of leaving the progression step unfinished.
Keep Stygian Stones available for converting into a missing Greater boss key.
Spend Greater keys only after checking the boss's Unique pool against your build.
Know Which Key Tier You're Farming
Greater and Superior Lair Keys serve different parts of the Season 14 ladder. Confusing them can leave you farming the wrong activity for your actual goal. Initiate bosses help create Greater-key opportunities; Greater bosses offer more focused Unique hunting; Deathtoll Chambers are tied to Superior keys and the Corrupted Reaper's Hoard. The top tier is aimed at Mythic drops and Pandemonium Fragments, so your difficulty choice should follow your target rather than habit.

Why the Returning Items Matter
Season 15's preview lists Leoric's Crown, Nemesis Bracers, Stone of Jordan, Squirt's Blouse, Arioc's Needle, Henri's Perquisition, In-Geom, The Furnace, and Messerschmidt's Reaver. Eight are available in the current 3.2.0 preview, while Messerschmidt's Reaver is planned but not active there. These are intended as permanent additions, not one-season curiosities. Their names bring nostalgia, but their slot costs and effects decide if they survive the meta. Leoric's Crown, for example, counts as jewelry and changes how the gem in its helm interacts with your setup. Large two-handed items must also justify the flexibility you lose by giving up separate weapon slots.
Build Around the Item, Not the Name
The preview's direct Horadric Cube upgrade could make a strong Unique a long-term project. The proposed process keeps that item's affixes, Tempering, and Masterworking while turning it into Mythic quality; the result gains a Crafted tag, and only one item made through this method may be equipped at once. Costs can still change before launch, so don't rebuild your character around preview numbers. For now, save promising drops, inspect their affixes before selling them, and track which boss gives you the best route to the needed slot. That kind of planning makes your key stash feel like progress instead of clutter.
Your Practical Season Plan
Run standard-key activities until you have enough for a focused session, clear the Initiate boss your loadout handles most cleanly, and open every Hoard. Then convert flexible materials only when they complete a specific Greater-key target. For Season 15 preparation, test returning Uniques for their actual playstyle rather than their reputation, since powers and costs remain subject to change. A measured farming loop also leaves more room for crafting and Diablo IV Gold spending, which is far better than dumping every resource into a boss that was never part of your upgrade plan.
